Hometown Hero: John McCurry

Breaking Bread Ministries is a free meal program that provides lunch and groceries the third Saturday of each month to those in need in the community of Madisonville, KY.  Breaking Bread was founded by John McCurry in November 2011.  At their first event in January 2012, they fed 85 guests and Brothers’ BBQ catered the meal. 26 volunteers came that represented more than half-dozen churches and several service organizations.

Unlike most other resource outlets, there are no requirements to receive the services. Anyone who feels they are in need is welcome to come and be served.

Individuals and churches donate financially to purchase the groceries. The meals are sponsored and/or co-sponsored by local churches and businesses.

Breaking Bread has made a huge impact in our community by providing over 600,000 meals to 11,207 families, which represents 39,175 individuals, 11,657 of which are under the age of 18.

Breaking Bread was awarded the “Faith-Based Group Award for Volunteerism & Service” in the state of Kentucky in 2013. Breaking Bread is unique in the fact that you will see on average 155 volunteers serving. At times more than 20 different churches and organizations are represented at a monthly event.

The events take place at the old Food Town building – 275 West Center Street.

Anyone is more than welcome to come and volunteer on the third Saturday of every month. Volunteer sign in begins at 10 am. To volunteer, all you have to do is show up the day of and sign in. If you are interested in bringing a group of 10 or more, please contact Breaking Bread in advance to schedule a month to come. Anyone 12 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

While we are grateful for the many volunteers who organize or participate in food drives, the truth is that monetary contributions benefit us the most. We can leverage donations to maximum effect by using our buying power to purchase in bulk the items that are most needed. In other words, a donation of $1.00 can be multiplied into much more food than a donated can of food worth $1.00.

All financial donations can be made payable to: Breaking Bread Ministries, Inc and mailed to 738 Cottingham Pratt Rd, Sebree, KY 42455.

You can find more info regarding how you can help donate through Kroger, GE (employees and retirees) and AmazonSmile on our FB page.

If you are interested in volunteering, sponsoring/co-sponsoring a hot meal, or donating for our events/building fund, please send us a private message on Facebook (facebook.com/breakingbreadministry) or email us at kelly.breakingbread@gmail.com.
